After Mom takes me home, she sits down in the family room, in the big blue chair. I follow her into the room, still talking about my day.

“. . . and Spanish class is going to be really easy,” I say.

“Really?”

“Yeah, it’s all stuff you taught me last year.”

Mom starts to pull her shirt up. So I look away until everything is covered by Anna’s head.

Mom nursed all of us like this when we were babies. She thinks it’s very important, very healthy, for babies to be nursed by their mothers. That’s what God intended, she always says.

I keep talking. When I tell her about the boy who stuck out his leg and tripped me, the bottoms of her eyes turn red and I wish I hadn’t told her. So I try to make it sound like it was all, you know, kind of funny, kind of a practical joke that every freshman has to go through on his first day of public high school.
